Student Examination Opportunities
Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Exams
These exams are the most popular and recommended at Opus 1. As a result of many families coming from several parts of the world, they often ask for these exams, which are offered in over 80 countries. They consist of three primary exams: Practical Exam, Performance Grades, and Theory Exam. For additional information on these exams please click here to be taken to the ABRSM Teacher Training page.
Royal Conservatory of Music Exams
These examinations are very similar to ABRSM and are offered by the Canadian-based organization. Since Opus 1 prioritizes and recommends teachers use the ABRSM track, we typically discourage teachers from using RCM Exams. In rare instances where a student has already been on this track or specifically requests RCM and prefers not to use ABRSM, then teachers may proceed with this route instead.
Certificate of Merit (CM) Exams - Music Teachers Association of California
This examination is provided exclusively by MTAC. We discourage using this route and prefer students interested in exams to use ABRSM. For informational purposes, this examination has been added to the “student exam opportunities” page. In extreme circumstances such as student/parent’s insistence on using these exams, we allow teachers to follow this route. Membership in MTAC is required for participation.
