20 years of student success stories

What grows here reaches far beyond the music.

Confidence on stage. Focus at school. The patience to chase something hard for years. A lifelong love of music, shaped by centuries of great composers. Carnegie Hall invitations and gold medals are what those habits look like along the way — but the habits, and the love itself, are what last.

How Opus 1 compares

  • Most schools charge enrollment fees every year. We charge enrollment once — never again for our members.
  • Most schools require yearly or semester contracts. Month-to-month tuition. Withdraw anytime with 14 days’ notice.
  • Most schools raise tuition every year. We adjust tuition only every two years.
  • Most schools don’t allow rescheduling. Reschedule online with your teacher or a qualified substitute.
  • Most schools close for the summer. Open year-round — we only close for major national holidays.
  • Most local schools only offer CM exam prep. We prepare students for CM, RCM, and ABRSM.
  • Most schools have part-time admin or none. Full-time staff seven days a week — phone, email, or website chat.

Frequently asked

What Bay Area parents ask before starting music lessons.

What is the best age to start music lessons?

At Opus 1 Music Studio, children can begin music education as early as age 3 through our Music for Young Children group classes. Private lessons typically start at age 5 for piano and voice, age 6 for violin, and age 8 for cello and guitar — though readiness varies by child. A short trial lesson is the best way to confirm your child is ready before enrolling in weekly lessons.

Are music lessons worth it for children?

Yes — research consistently links sustained music study to gains in language development, executive function, math reasoning, focus, and self-confidence, and the most durable benefit is the lifelong relationship students build with music. Opus 1 Music Studio serves more than 1,400 active students across Mountain View and Palo Alto, and most students continue weekly lessons for multiple years.

What is the difference between private lessons and group music classes?

Private lessons (ages 5 and up) are one-on-one weekly sessions with a dedicated teacher, customized to each student's instrument, pace, and goals — including ABRSM and Certificate of Merit exam preparation. Group classes (ages 3 and up) follow our Music for Young Children curriculum, focusing on rhythm, pitch, ear training, and ensemble musicianship. Many Opus 1 families start with a group class and move to private lessons once their child is ready.

Do I need an instrument at home before starting lessons?

For piano and most string instruments, yes — daily practice between lessons is essential to progress, so a working instrument at home is needed within the first month of enrollment. Voice and music theory students do not need an instrument to start. Your Opus 1 teacher can recommend appropriate beginner instruments or rental options after your trial lesson.
